Hreflang
Hreflang is an HTML attribute that tells search engines which language and geographical region a specific webpage targets, enabling proper content distribution across international markets.
Explained
Hreflang is an HTML attribute used to signal to search engines the intended language and geographical region of a webpage. It helps search engines present the most appropriate version of a page to users based on their language and location, improving user experience and conversion potential across global markets.
The attribute uses ISO 639-1 language codes and ISO 3166-1 Alpha 2 country codes (for example, en-US for English speakers in the United States and fr-CA for French speakers in Canada). Hreflang creates bidirectional clusters of related international content, meaning every variant must link to every other variant, including itself.
Hreflang can be implemented in three primary ways:
- HTML link elements in the
<head>of a page, best for most websites. - HTTP headers, suitable for non-HTML files such as PDFs.
- XML sitemaps, ideal for large-scale or enterprise deployments.
Proper implementation works alongside other internationalization signals such as ccTLD domains, subdirectories, and subdomains. It is also important to include a self-referencing hreflang tag on each page and an x-default value to handle users whose language or location does not match any defined variant.
When executed correctly, hreflang can increase international organic traffic, reduce bounce rates, lower customer acquisition costs, and improve conversion rates in target markets.
